Part 1: Erwin McManus' False Teachings

Ron Foster from Apprising Ministries has an eye-opening article on the teachings of Erwin McManus. Foster used to attend Mosaic church and his expose is written from the point of view of a McManus insider.

In this important piece Foster says:

Erwin McManus has made it crystal clear that he hates Christianity. This is very well documented. He has said, “The greatest enemy of the movement of Jesus Christ is Christianity,” and “My goal is to destroy Christianity as a world religion and be a recatalyst for the movement of Jesus Christ”... There are many who claim to be Christians but show no evidence of Christ being their Lord... We should hate that kind of “Christianity”...

...When Erwin says he wants to destroy Christianity, he is speaking of the Church of Jesus Christ that exalts God’s glory in justification by faith alone to the glory of God alone.

Erwin McManus' Real Position on the Authority of Scripture

Apprising Ministries has a fine article written by Ron Foster that explores Erwin McManus' real position on the Authority of the scriptures.

Foster quotes a member of McManus' leadership staff regarding how small group studies were handled:

He interrupted me and told me something that changed my “teaching” approach for years to come. He said, in so many words, “Don’t waste your time preparing a lesson. It’s better to be unprepared because then the discussion can be open. Everyone gets to figure out together what the text means and how it applies to them personally, and everyone benefits from that sharing experience. If you really want your group to grow, let them figure out what the Scriptures mean all on their own. You’re only doing them harm if you come to your group knowing more than they do.”

I wish I had had the discernment at the time to ignore that counsel, but I didn’t. And for the next five years or so, every discussion I “facilitated” amounted to reading a Scripture passage, then having everyone discuss what they thought it meant. It was a pooling of ignorance, mine included.

Stories like this are far too common now-a-days. This type of stuff not only plagues Emergent type churches but far too many of the seeker-sensitive and Purpose-Driven churches as well.

If we are going to turn the tide then we're going to need to give people the tools to dig out what God's word means rather than leaving them to fend for themselves with subjective and narcissistic interpretations.
